Fighting Tips Weekly

Today on fighting tips weekly I’m going to tell you how to improve your arm movements when doing Muay Thai round house kicks.

First of all, different trainers teach different technique and not every trainer is strong in all aspects of fighting. When I started off Muay Thai I had a teacher who taught me to shield my face with my left hand and thrust my right arms outward to create power from my kick (regular stance). Later, a different instructor taught me a different technique which really improved the power, accuracy and explosiveness of my kicks. Many top fighters such as Buakaw and Yodsanklai use this technique.

Fighting tips: Muay Thai Roundhouse kick arms (Explained as if in regular stance. Swap hands if south paw or for switch kicks)

1. (This step is for before you have actually thrown the kick) Initiating the kick (usually by stepping at a 45 degree angle or switching stance for switch kicks), bring your right fist to your left temple.

2. As you perform step one, simultaneously drop your left arm to your left side.

3. When throwing the kick thrust your right arm diagonally from your left temple to the right side of your body.

4. While performing step 3 bring your left fist to your left temple.

Simple as that! That’s fighting tips number 1 hope it helps! Check out this vid of Buakaw demonstrating his kicking technique and pay close attention to what he does with his arms.
