Homemade Weights

Here’s a nifty method of making homemade weights at low prices or even for free. I discovered this while taking the stereo out of my old van before taking it to the wreckers. I thought the hole in the spare tire looked like it might fit an Olympic barbell and what do you know.. it did!

What you need: All you need is access to a car wreckers, tire shop, mechanic or your own old car etc. These places often throw out old vehicle wheels which you can use. Alternatively, you can ask such places if they have any old wheels which you could purchase for low prices.

How heavy are the wheels and tires?: The wheel and tire feels about the same weight as a 15-20kg weight plate when fully pumped with air.

Is the weight adjustable?: You can adjust the weight of the tires by letting out or adding air. Alternatively, by cutting a hole the tire you can add weight to it with cement, sand, dirt or something similar. Just use a sealant to cover it up!

Is it an exact fit? The hole is slightly larger than a standard Olympic barbell however, it is not an issue as a standard collar will hold it firmly in place preventing it from falling off.

Anything else? Have fun lifting with your new homemade weights!
